The award was presented at Amalienborg Palace to professor and chief physician Ellen-Margrethe Hauge for her extraordinary contribution to research relating to rheumatoid arthritis. The prize was established in 1978 to mark Queen Ingrid's 25-year career as a patron of the Arthritis Association. Queen Margrethe has since then taken over her mother's patronage.

The research scholarship is given to a young research talent and is a gift from the Arthritis Association on the occasion of the Queen's 80th birthday.
